BOTOX INJECTION

Our emotions are fully expressed in our faces.  Whether it is laughter, sadness, or surprise, the expressions we make are the first thing people see.  We also use our mouths for many activities, talking, eating, yawning, laughing, and when we are not engaged in these activities, we must allow our jaw muscles and joints to relax.  Often time we develop habits that do not permit these muscles or joints to relax enough time.  Over time these activities can lead to wrinkles, crow’s feet (lateral areas of the eyes), and laugh lines, which are all beautiful reminders of a life well-lived.  This can also cause TMD pain which can be alleviated with moist heat and ice therapy, anti-inflammatory pain medication, splint therapy or complex surgical therapy.   At Sparkle Dental we offer Botox treatment to address your TMD discomfort.

Botox is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.  Botox is an injectable solution that reduces the contraction of the facial muscles.  Botox can relax muscles of the face and neck which cause wrinkles associated with facial expressions.  Botox can treat TMJ disorders, blocking the release of Acetylcholine at the neuromuscular synapse, preventing the over contraction of the muscles.  Botox injection works on many muscles of the head and neck and the muscles of mastication.  It is used widely to help with Myalgia (muscles pain), orofacial pain from head and neck muscles, myofascial pain from muscle’s connective tissue where trigger points are located.  Botox injection affects the muscles, indirectly it protects the teeth from being damaged (bruxism) and stop the progression of gingival recession.  Botox is diluted to a very controlled solution and injected into the muscles with a very thin needle.  The procedure only takes 15-20 minutes and the results last 3-6 months.  With repeated treatments, the results may tend to last longer with time.  If you are concerned about pain, or have sensitive facial areas, we will be happy to apply an ice pack or anesthetic cream to the area we will be working on.  Contact Sparkle Dental today for your TMD evaluation.  We will be happy to design a treatment to meet your dental needs.
